Surf win SBL Title
The OC Surf hoisted up the inaugural Sunset Baseball League championship after defeating the Inland Valley Pirates 10-5 at Blair Field Saturday night. The Surf actually fell behind in the top of the first after the Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead. The Surf responded immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first. Nashea Diggs and Phil Steering each had infield singles and scored. Tyler Gnesda had an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Diggs and Steering came home on an Andris Rizquez line-drive bullet to right field. Rizquez scored the third run of the inning after stealing two bases. The Pirates answered with one run in the top of the second off of Surf starter Tyler Miller to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the bottom of the second, the Surf scored six after sending 10 to the plate. Jason Bush, Luke Hussung, Steering, Gnesda, Rizquez and Brett Thompson each scored. Gnesda had his second RBI in the inning and Hussung tallied his first of two. Alex Dimascio ripped in two RBI.The Pirates attempted to make a comeback in the fourth scoring three runs to cut the margin to 9-5. The final run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh as Dimascio crossed home plate to stretch the lead to 10-5. Louis Corral was sensational in relief working 5.1 innings and striking out 10, while only allowing one hit. Corral earned the championship game MVP.
